TRACK & FIELD SEASON

The Summer Track and Field season is conducted between late September/early October and late March/early April.

In simple terms, (with the exception of holidays and different Championships) irrespective of competition structure, the season enables an athlete to compete weekly.

Competition structure is in two parts:

i) The Club Premiership is conducted from October to late December. This competition is designed to encourage participation of teenage and older athletes and involves Club teams.
Meets are conducted at various tracks throughout Sydney, including the Central Coast and Wollongong.

ii) Allcomer Meets are conducted before and after the Club Premiership, predominantly at SOPAC (Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre; that is, the Sydney 2000 Warm Up track at Homebush). Some meets are held at other tracks.

Unlike competitions in other States and Countries, there is no grading or qualification system in place. On the day, where required, heats of an event will be “seeded” according to ability. This means that elite, “ordinary” club, Masters/Veterans and junior athletes can compete together, if not in the same event, then in the same competition.

State Championships:

i) The NSW Open and AWD Championships are conducted in mid/late February. The NSW State Masters Championships are conducted subsequently as separate stand alone championships…..as also are the combined NSW State U16, U18, U20 and U23 Championships.

ii) The NSW State 3000m, 5,000m and 10,000m Championships are conducted early in the new year before the Open Championships.

iii) A highlight of the track season is the NSW State Relays (Junior, Open, Masters; 4 x 100m to 4 x 1500m) which are conducted in November. Athletics East is a regular and enthusiastic entrant in these Championships.

ROAD & CROSS COUNTRY SEASON

The Winter Road and Cross Country season is conducted between April and September.

Competition structure comprises eight State Championships:

i) Four Road and Cross Country combined Individual and Teams Championships,

ii) Two Road and Cross Country Relay Championships, and

iii) State Half Marathon and Marathon Championships.

All Championships include Under age, Open and Master/Veterans categories. Some include Fun Runs.

The Road and Cross Country Championships are held in Sydney suburbs and the Central Coast, Nowra and Wollongong. The Half and Marathon are held in central Sydney.

Additionally, the Athletics East conducts three Club events: two Cross Countries (in Queens and Centennial Parks) and a Road Race (at Malabar), which include our Club Road and Cross Country Championships.

MASTERS / VETERANS ATHLETICS

Athletics East has a very active Masters group who in recent years has placed in numerous State, Australian and World Championships. The group comprises males and females; thirties through to fifties; sprinters, middle and distance runners, jumpers and hurdlers.

Masters athletics is integrated into both the ANSW Summer Track & Field and Winter Road and Cross Country competition structures.

Track and Field: Masters athletes compete in the same Club Premiership and Allcomer events as Open athletes, either together in the same event or in a seeded heat of the event.

The age categories for both male and female are five year age categories from 30+.

The ANSW State Masters Championships are held separately from the ANSW State Open Championships in late February. The State Masters 10,000m Championship is conducted conjointly with the ANSW State Open 10,000m in early January. The State Masters 5000m is conducted as part of the ANSW State Masters Championships. (There is no State Masters 3000m).

The Australian Masters Championships are conducted under the auspices of the Australian Masters Athletics Inc over the four days of Easter.

A highlight of the track season is the ANSW State Relays (4 x 100m to 4 x 1500m) which are conducted in November. Athletics East is a regular and enthusiastic entrant in these Championships. Masters’ Teams from the Club consistently medal.

Road and Cross Country: Masters athletes compete in the same eight ANSW State Championships as Open athletes, either as part of an Open Team or as a Masters’ Team competing in the same event.

The age categories for both both male and female are five year age categories from 35+.

Masters’ athletes from Athletics East also compete in a number of other competitions such as the Australian Masters Games, Trans Tasman Masters Games and Pan Pacific Masters Games.
