St George Classic – 27th April 2024

St George hosted the Inaugural Classic Dual Relay Champs this year. This event replaced the traditional 10km Novice Champs which had a 100 year plus tradition. It was a bold move and was well supported for many age categories with the exception being the very poor open men’s and women’s division. Enough said about losers we would prefer to concentrate on the well supported events.

First race off the mark was the U16 men’s 2 x 2km, the Tancred brothers excelling time wise in their respective runs. They finished 9th in a very competitive age group.

The men’s 60+ 2 person 2 legs each x1km were next off with Campbell Dawson and Wayne Cooper. This was ultimately a strong field and our 4th placing was well earned.

The next race was again a 2 person team only difference being it was 2 legs each x 2km in distance. Open, 30+, 40+ and 50+ were combined with the under 18’s & under 20’s so it was a busy and congested field at times. Great debut runs from Dasun Ganhewa and Jane Wilcox to finish second in 30+ (nice work coach Ken).  The 40+ women’s team also finished 2nd, by an agonizing 2 secs with Kylie-Anne Richards and Rona Macniven both running solid legs. The 50+ men’s teams turned up the heat with a first and second place and the C team finishing 6th. Great runs from all with standout first leg first lap from Mark ‘Boom’ Gregory and Campbell Dawson backing after his 60+ runs. The 50+ women’s teams of Naomi Tancred and Sally Hannah finishing first with Jackie Wright and Aggie Fichera coming 3rd only 10 secs behind 2nd.

Many thanks to support team of Ris, Jane Boyd, Ken Cross and The Reel Master Robyn.
