Treloar Shield Final – 3rd Place for AE

Not content with just a first time appearance in the Treloar Shield final AE then showed courage and commitment to earn a hard fought battle with Hills District for a third place podium finish.

In extremely hot and difficult conditions where clouds were in very short supply our over 50 team performed in time honoured legendary fashion.

This is the ANSW flagship club competition for all ages. From juniors to masters, male and females combine as a team with the 5 best teams over 6 preliminary rounds to qualify for the final. Club and team spirit through participation are evident in abundance throughout as the events create a carnival atmosphere.

We entered the final chuffed with having qualified, from a pool of 26 clubs, prepared to give what we could on the day against the more finals experienced clubs.

We have 22 over 50’s registered athletes and incredibly we have had 18 take part in the Treloar Shield. Our “Legend” will always continue when we have athletes who will step up when needed for the team. This was an incredible part of the story on the day as we had many playing the part by doing events that were first time attempts (not what you expect in a final by any stretch of the imagination).

Shot Put – Peter–Biceps-Sweeny
High Jump – Ken-Impala-Wilson, Lyn–Roo–Collins, Peter-Biceps–Wallaby-Sweeny
Long Jump – Andrew–Beaman–Harris, Peter-Biceps-Wallaby-Eagle-Sweeny
Javelin – Peter-Biceps-Wallaby-Eagle-Zelezeny–Sweeny

All athletes were outstanding as every performance gained points towards the overall score. Finishing an event was important and as we progressed into afternoon the points tally was showing us reducing the gap from 4th to third.  High Jump of all things gave us a Christmas load of points over our rivals. The middle distance 1500 was crucial and it did not disappoint getting max points with wins in both. With approx 4 events to go we had achieved 3rd place; this was a 40 point lead which then dropped to 30 points with two events to go. The mixed 4 x 200 ended up a match race between AE and Hills with Hills just edging us on the line for a 1 point advantage. It was hinging on the Long Jump and the team delivered with Peter, Andrew, Ris & Robyn securing the coveted points.

Respect and appreciation goes to all:
